When sunny or rainy days call for a solution, you can rest assured that retractable awnings are the answer! But just like umbrella, there are different types of retractable awnings on the market. From the main function to the little extra features, which is the absolute best one for you?

About Retractable Awnings

Most homeowners know the shade that these awnings provide for a deck or patio area, making time spent outdoors more enjoyable. Not only are they functional, but they also retract inwards, which means you don’t have to see it all the time if you don’t want to - call it the best of both worlds!

Retractable Awning Models

1250 Plug Series is ideal for applications where the awning is exposed, such as roof mounted installations.

1350 Series is heavy duty and features a multi spring tension system, ideal for larger projections.

Exterior Color Combinations for Your Home

Getting ready to reno your home? Paint your home one of these color combinations to make first impressions count:

Gray + Slate Blue - A peaceful, neutral palette best fit for a mid-century modern style home.

Cocoa + Olive - Cocoa brown siding paired with olive brick steps will give your home that rustic, cozy feel.

Gray + Paprika Red - A dark gray and deep red color combination is eye-catching and complimentary. Go with gray siding and red trimming to make things pop.

Salmon + Jade - For an old world theme, choose these exterior colors, and pair them with brown shutters. The tones jade resemble rich jewel-tones and the salmon compliments, but the brown warms things up.

Gray + Cobalt - We love gray so much because it goes with almost anything. If you’re going for gray siding, paint your door a cobalt blue and then add white trim around your windows.

Black + White - A classic color scheme for any home, especially a historic country style. PAint the siding white, give it a black roof, and add charcoal gray accents.

Once you find the perfect color combination for your home, we’ll help you choose a custom awning to compliment. At Dean Custom Awnings, we offer a wide variety of awnings in different colors ,styles, and sizes. Choosing the Right Size Retractable Awning

Retractable awnings give you the best of both worlds. They’re there when you need them, and can retract when you don’t. Everyone can benefit from the beauty and function of these awnings, but before you choose one it’s best to set your mind on the proper size. Here are two major tips we suggest you consider:

Know the purpose

Are you looking to extend your outdoor space? Want a solution that will cool off your home? Whichever the purpose, you’ll want to know the reason behind installing an awning before you actually have one installed. If the purpose is to extend your outdoor space, you’ll want it large enough to cover your patio or deck area. If it’s primary use is to shade your home from the hot sun, the measurements will be different.

Measure deck/patio or storefront

Whether your awning is for your home or business, your next step is to measure the area around it. By that, we mean know the width and length of your deck, patio, storefront, or restaurant. No awning should be too large or too small and is completely dependent upon the size of the space it covers.

At Dean Custom Awnings, we create and install retractable awnings customized to your unique space. We will help you every step of the way, from the brainstorming process to installation and maintenance. There’s no project too big or small that we are not ready to take on. August Outdoor Maintenance

While summer is still in full bloom, take the opportunity to create a checklist of the ways in which you can care for your home’s exterior. Grab a pen or iPad, because you’ll want to write these down:

1. Check for signs of rot. Examine structural areas of your home, such as your deck, using a flat-blade screwdriver. Check the stairs and railing. Areas of rot that are large (larger than a silver dollar) will need to be replaced.

2. Inspect the ledger. Using a flashlight, inspect underneath your deck as well. Pay close attention to the ledger, which frames and attaches to your home. The ledger should be attached with lag screws and not only nails.

3. Blow the leaves. Don’t let the leaves and other debris pile up in spots around your home. Use a blower to get them away from corners and collect in a garbage bag. This task is especially important after large storms, when leaves become saturated and fall from tree limbs around your home.

4. Clean your awning. Keeping your awning clean from leaves and debris is just as important as any other outdoor maintenance. Start by brushing off loose dirt and hosing down the entire awning. Then use a water and mild soap solution and clean using a soft bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry. If you have a retractable awning, do not retract when wet to avoid mold and mildew.

Cost Effective Upgrades for Your Home

// posted by Vic Santiago on Wednesday, August 03, 2016

Whether you’re a landlord looking for upgrades before renting out, or you plan on selling your house within a few months to a year, you might start to think about how you can make your home more cost effective. From sprucing up the exterior to making smart functional additions, here are three home improvement projects we recommend:

Paint - A fresh coat of paint on the interior or exterior is an inexpensive solution to remodeling your home. A freshly painted room looks clean and updated - it also speaks volumes for your home’s value. Whether you’re looking to sell or rent out, keep the tones neutral to appeal to the largest number of prospective buyers and renters. A can of paint doesn’t cost much, so buy a few and start rolling on a new color!

Plant trees - Boost your home’s curb appeal by planting a tree or two. You might not be looking to sell your house today, but we promise that in the future (when your tree fully matures) your landscaping will appeal to many. This home improvement project can also help you cut back on cooling costs during the warmer months, as trees create more shade around your home.

Install an awning - Speaking of cutting cooling costs, there’s no solution better than an awning. Awnings can reduce harmful UV rays and lower inside temperatures by as much as 8-15 degrees. But when you do want a little more sunlight during the cooler months of the year, opt for a retractable awning. That way, you can wind it back up as you please.

If you’re looking to boost your home’s value, we guarantee that a custom awning by Dean Custom Awnings is a smart solution! We can provide you with versatile, retractable awnings and more to protect your home and make it more cost effective! To learn more, give us a call at (845) 425-1193.

Awnings Vs. Umbrellas

Let’s face it: umbrellas are inexpensive and easy to put up at your local home furnishing store. But what happens when a windy storm rolls through? What about the hassle of finding a place to store for the winter? We might be a little biased, but we can guarantee that awnings are the better way to go. Here’s why:

More durable

Rain, shine, snow showers - you name it! Awnings will be there to protect your home investment as well as your deck or patio space. Not only do awnings come in a wider variety of strong materials, but they are also bolted to the exterior of your home, unlike umbrellas. And what’s even better is that you can opt for a retractable awning, designed to easily tuck away when you think the winds might be a bit too strong (especially during hurricane or blizzard season).

UV protection & indoor temps

Most full-functioning handheld umbrellas can block three-quarters of UV light on a sunny day, so we can assume umbrellas can get the job done as well. But can they block out the majority of UV rays and reduce indoor temps by as much as 8-15 degrees? Talk about saving energy!

If you have a pool or patio, a custom built cabana style awning, retractable awning or a custom built stationary awning will make a great addition and extension of living space! If you have a screened porch that requires sun shade or privacy, automated shades can be an excellent solution! At Dean Custom Awnings, we can protect you and your home for UV rays more than your typical umbrella can. Who Needs a Retractable Awning?

The main function of a retractable awning is to provide protection and to make your exterior look more aesthetically appealing, all while having the capability to move it out of the way when needed. Whether you own a home or a commercial building, everyone can benefit from a retractable awning. Here’s what we mean:

retractable awnings new haven county ct | commercial awnings new haven county ct | awnings fairfield county ct

Homeowners If you’re one who spends most of your spring and summer days in the backyard, then there’s no doubt that an awning is for you - especially if you live in a warm, rainy, humid climate. Retractable awnings are great for protecting your home’s exterior (and you). But when you feel like enjoying the sunshine or want to show off your home without the awning, you have the freedom to do so.
Restaurants Does your restaurant have outdoor seating? Don’t let your guest’s dinner get rained on! Protecting them with a retractable awning is the way to go. Just retract when it starts to rain (or if it’s too hot out) and put away when the weather is unquestionably beautiful. You never know how many customers a rainy day can bring.

Storefront owners The same rules apply for storefront owners. Whether you’re in retail or the plumbing industry, installing a retractable awning out front serves two functions: (1) it provides protection for customers (especially if they need to wait outside for any reason) and (2) it makes your storefront look more aesthetically appealing. The best way to take advantage of a retractable awning for your business is to customize it to match your brand image.
At Dean Custom Awnings, we can customize your retractable awning and more! We will visit your business location or home to meet with you and discuss your design ideas, no matter how big or small. For more information on how we can provide you with top notch custom retractable awning solutions, visit us on the web or call us at (845) 525-1193.

An awning has several functions. Not only does it expand your space, but it also acts as a quiet, shady area for you to relax outside. From cutting UV rays to keeping you cool and dry, the benefits are endless. And with so many materials and colors to choose from, an awning can also add to your curb appeal.

Retractable Awning Installation

Retractable awnings are an essential addition to any backyard, so it’s important that they are set up properly and without fail. If you’re thinking about this smart solution to shelter you from rain or shine, you might be curious about the setup process. At Dean Custom Awnings, our professionals are trained and experienced in awning installation. Here’s how we provide you with a custom awning:

Prep work

Evaluate - Our professionals evaluate the area and make sure it’s not obstructed with lighting fixtures, vents, generators or other obstructions, so that your awning can easily swing up and down.

Measure and mark - We then mark how high you want the awning to be installed. Next, we attach it high enough so that people can comfortably walk under the clearance, but not too high that sun is always coming in through the open side.

Mount the brackets - Once we know exactly where your awning should be, we mount the brackets to keep your awning safe and secure. This is where the hood and the bar if the awning will need to be installed.

The commitment to proper and quality installation means we work harder and smarter than our competition. We are at the forefront of the awning industry and offer our customers the latest and most convenient, speedy services available. We are members of the North East Canvas Products Association (NECPA), Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI), and Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA), and we carry only the best in awning products.
